~Story~

One day, the peaceful Mushroom Kingdom was invaded by the Koopa clan - a tribe of ferocious turtles known for their dark magic. In an instant, the peace-loving citizens were morphed into mere stones, bricks, and even bushes! If something would not be known soon, the Mushroom Kingdom would fall into ruin...

The only one who could undo the Koopas' evil spell and restore the kingdom's citizens to their normal selves was the Mushroom Kingdom's own Princess Peach. Unfortunately, she was whisked away from the kingdom by the King of the Koopas, the mighty King Bowser. He escapes to the stars, with the princess in tow...

Mario, the hero of our story, learns of the Mushroom Kingdom's plight, and sets off on a journey to free the Princess from the Koopas' evil grasp, and restore peace to the Mushroom Kingdom.
You are Mario, and it is up to you to save the kingdom from the dark magic of the Koopas!

~Collectibles~

As you progress through the game, you'll come across "?" boxes, which contain power-ups and items. To collect these items, strike the bottom of the boxes by jumping into them.

Coins
You will come across many coins on your journey. Collect 100 of them for an extra life.

Mushrooms
These turn Mario into Super Mario. as Super Mario, Mario grows big, giving him the ability to survive a hit from an enemy, and the ability to smash bricks by striking them from underneath. If Mario is hit by an enemy while in this form, he will revert to his smaller self.

Fire Flower
The Fire Flower gives Mario the ability to throw fireballs with button 2, which can defeat enemies from a distance, even enemies Mario normally couldn't defeat before.

Feather
This item gives Mario a cape, and with it a multitude of abilities. He can perform a spin attack while on the ground with button 2, which can defeat enemies at close range, and even smash bricks. Also, when Mario is falling, hold button 1 to descend more slowly and gently to the ground.
And last but not least, the feather grants Mario the ability to fly! Hold button 2 while running to pick up speed, and then when the "P" meter in the lower left corner of the screen starts to blink, hold button 1 to take to the skies! You are free to fly around until the cape runs out of magical power, after which you must repeat the process to fly again.

P-Wing
This extremely rare item grants Mario all the benefits of the feather, only now the "P" meter will always be full, and the cape will never run out of magical power, allowing you to fly to your heart's content! However, the P-Wing's effect wears off after clearing the level.

Cherries
Collecting these floating fruits will add to the star meter in the lower-right corner of the screen. Once the meter is full, a Starman will appear...

Starman
Collect a Starman to become invincible! You will not be harmed by enemy attacks, and enemies that touch you will instantly be defeated. However, the Starman's effect will wear off after a short time.

~Other Items~

Pipes - there are many pipes all throughout the Mushroom Kingdom, and some can be entered by pressing the down directional button while standing on them. These pipes take you to the next part of the level. There are many diverging paths through each level, so different pipes may take you to a different part of the level...

Trampolines - these spring boards allow Mario to bounce high into the air when he lands on them. Holding button 1 while landing on a trampoline will allow Mario to bounce up even higher. Trampolines come in two different colors - red and green. Red trampolines remain stationary, but green trampolines can be picked up and carried around by holding button 2!

Checkpoints - a few areas throughout the level contain checkpoint signs. If you lose a life, you will return to the last checkpoint area you visited.

~Enemies~

Several bad guys pace about the Mushroom Kingdom. Most of them can be defeated simply by stomping on them. Hold button 1 while landing on an enemy to bounce higher off their heads.

Goombas - These traitorous Mushrooms are a common sight. One stomp on the head should take care of them.

Shy Guys - The masked members of the "8 bits" gang. After you stomp a Shy Guy's head, it will be knocked unconscious, after which it can be picked up and carried around by holding button 2! While holding a Shy Guy, it can be used as a shield against other enemies to defeat them! However, bear in mind that an unconscious Shy Guy will eventually wake up, so be careful!

Piranha Plants - Carnivorous plants that dwell in pipes. Unlike most other enemies, Piranha Plants can't be stomped on! However, they won't come out of their pipes while you are standing on them.

Hoopstars - Ladybugs that can be seen climbing vines and fences. Like Goombas, they can be defeated with a single stomp.

Amps - These spinning, electrified foes cannot be defeated by conventional means...

Spinies - Spiked fiends kept as pets by the Koopas. Stomping on them will only injure you!

Ninjis - Ninjalike agents of the 8 bits gang. They stand in one spot, jumping up and down.

Lakitu - A servant of the Koopas, he patrols the skies atop a moving cloud. He keeps an unlimited supply of spinies on hand, and is ready to unleash them at any given moment.

Bob'ombs - Wind-up toys loaded with explosives. Once attacked, they will explode momentarily, so stand clear! Much like Shy Guys, they can be carried around and used against other enemies. And perhaps, with their explosive tendencies, they may be able to clear new paths...

Sparks - Shining with electricity, they crawl across floors in a circular motion. Like their cousins, the Amps, they cannot be defeated by conventional means.

Koopalings - A member of the Koopa clan awaits at the end of every level. Koopalings rely on dark magic and an assortment of other tricks to defeat Mario. Koopalings take four stomps to defeat, and once the Koopaling is defeated, the level will be cleared.
